Most of the fun lies in measuring how hot the compost gets and whether it gets hot enought to kill weeds

Fresh Compost can heat up very fast as the microbes and bacteria get to work in the initial stages of decomposition. This is more pronounced if there is grass in the mix. Woody compost will heat more slowly and take longer to decay. Worms will not enter that part of the composter until the contents have cooled completely as heat will burn their skins. Worms like it moist, cold and dark and can usually be found about 4" below the surface where it is colder.
